The practice of family law is difficult and made even more so when our client has experienced trauma, and both of these respected and seasoned lawyers will speak to the topic of trauma-informed lawyering, how we can put the realities of the client’s trauma experience at the forefront when engaging with the client, the other party/counsel and with the court, and this presentation with touch on a variety of professional issues including impacts on cognition and emotional regulation and trust building and goal clarification.

Tamara Scarowsky is the founder and managing partner of Savia Legal PC, Family and Estate Law. In addition to litigation, Tamara has a robust practice as a mediator and collaborative lawyer. She has held various board and committee positions with Collaborative Divorce Ottawa. Tamara is regularly invited to speak on various topics, including family violence. Tamara was involved in launching the inaugural International Conference on Coercive Control, now in its sixth year. She often works with students and new lawyers, most recently as a mentor in the uOttawa Family Law Mentorship Pilot Program. Tamara has appeared before various levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada, where she recently represented an intervener in the Ahluwalia v. Ahluwalia appeal.
