During this program, participants heard from Ali Chahbar, a local Muslim lawyer, who delivered a passionate, eloquent and informative presentation on Combatting Islamophobia. His presentation was particularly relevant following the attack on a Muslim family in London, Ontario in June 2021. Ali’s presentation discussed the following topics so that the audience could learn more, understand more and take action:

  • A brief introduction to Islam;
  • The definition of Islamophobia;
  • What has given rise to Islamophobia;
  • Who are Muslims in Canada;
  • Personal experiences with Islamophobia;
  • Recommendations of the National Council of Canadian Muslims and
  • What we can do to combat Islamophobia.

Ali encourages everyone to be anti-racist and take action to combat all racism and discrimination.

Presenters

Ali Chahbar

Ali Chahbar is the General Legal Counsel and Executive Officer with the Thames Valley District School Board.

He graduated with a BA (Honors) degree in Political Science from Western University in 2004 before earning his law degree from the University of Windsor in 2007.

Before joining the Thames Valley District School Board as their legal counsel in early in 2018, Ali spent the better part of the past decade working as a litigation lawyer in private practice in London, regularly appearing as lead counsel before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Federal Court of Canada and Ontario Court of Appeal on multiple occasions.

Outside of his professional obligations, Ali sits on a number of not-for-profit boards in the London region. He was appointed by the Ontario Solicitor General as a member of the London Police Services Board in 2021 and was elected as the board’s Vice-Chair in 2022. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club of London since 2008 and was selected as president in 2015 for a two-year term. He has also served on the Board of Directors of other local charitable organizations such as the Elgin Middlesex London Crime Stoppers and Kids Kicking Cancer Board of Directors.
