What Every Family Lawyer & Civil Litigator Needs to Know About the New Tort of Family Violence

Paula Puddy, HBA LLB MBA

The Middlesex Law Association (MLA) hosts this week’s timely seminar on the Court's recently recognized new tort of family violence. Victims of family violence now have access to a new civil remedy that acknowledges the unique suffering that victims face when they experience violence from a loved one.

Learn from skilled presenters Laura Camarra, Anju Fujioka, Claire Houston, and Hilary Jenkins, as they examine relevant decisions showing why recognition of this new tort makes it essential, now more than ever, that family lawyers and civil litigators know how to recognize and respond to clients experiencing family violence.

The speakers cover a number of topics, procedural considerations, and strategies, including, considerations when navigating different courts and jurisdictions, how the tort of family violence interacts with parallel proceedings (criminal, child protection, divorce), and skills for a trauma-informed lawyer. The program also explains how the tort of family violence interacts with existing torts.
