Electronic Monitoring of Employees & Cybersecurity & Protection of Data

Paula Puddy, HBA LLB MBA

Join us for this two-part Middlesex Law Association (MLA) program presented by Gordon Lee, and David Canton. David Canton gives a briefing on the legislation surrounding electronic monitoring of employees. Afterwards, Gordon Lee provides valuable information on the importance of cybersecurity and protecting your data.

David Canton discusses the privacy act, surveillance disclosure agreements, and how privacy policies should be crafted when electronically monitoring employees. He also outlines what kind of surveillance requires disclosure, and the various penalties under the Employment Standards Act (ESA). David Canton explains the importance of disclosing to employees how they are being monitored, how the information will be protected, and how it will be used by the employer.

In the second part of the program, Gordon Lee examines the evolution of technology, the advent of cybercrime, how it works, and the steps that individuals can take to actively protect their data. Gordon Lee explains the avenues cyber criminals may use to steal information. He also deconstructs how to recognize fraudulent text messages, prevent identity theft, and media deception while online, all of which is becoming more prevalent in our personal and professional lives.
