Lawyers who argued cases in the East region will be presenting on their case, talking about their trial or Charter motion strategy, their legal arguments, and how they advocated for the acquittal of their client or the overturning of the conviction in appeal court.

Geraldine Castle-Trudel

Neha Chugh

Neha Chugh graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, Social Development Studies and Social Work from the University of Waterloo, and completed a Master’s degree in Planning from the University of Guelph. Her passion for community development and social policy led her to Osgoode Hall Law School where she focused on criminal law, family law, and children and the law. Neha completed her articles with senior criminal defence counsel in downtown Toronto, and was called to the Bar in 2011. Her practice started in Eastern Ontario with a distinct focus on driving offences – Impaired Driving, Over 80, Refuse Breath Sample, and Dangerous Driving cases. Since then she has expanded her practice to cover all areas of Criminal Law.

Eric Granger

Eric Granger is a lawyer with Greenspon, Brown & Associates. Eric obtained his B.Arts Sc. (Hons.)(Summa Cum Laude) as a graduate of the Arts & Science Program at McMaster University in 2001. He obtained his LL.B. (Magna Cum Laude) as the silver medalist in law from the Common Law Program at the University of Ottawa in 2004. Eric completed his articles with Greenspon, Brown and has remained with the firm ever since his call to the bar in July 2005. Eric practices criminal law both at the trial and appellate level as well as related administrative law litigation. Eric teaches appellate advocacy at the University of Ottawa law school and is a member of the Steering Committee at the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic and the Board of Directors of the Collaborative Justice Program. He is presently the treasurer of the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa, and a member of the planning committee for this conference.

John Hale

Howard Krongold

Howard Krongold is a partner at Abergel Goldstein & Partners LLP. His practice focusses on criminal and quasi-criminal appeals and complex trials. Howard has argued several significant cases before the Supreme Court of Canada, and has appeared as lead counsel in over 60 appeals before the Court of Appeal for Ontario. Howard is also an adjunct professor of law at the University of Ottawa, where he teaches The Law of Evidence, and he regularly lectures at professional education conferences. He is currently a director of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association.

Brett McGarry

Brett McGarry is a partner at Lyttle McGarry Del Greco LLP, an Ottawa based firm that defends serious criminal and regulatory charges. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 2008, after clerking for the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario.

Michelle O'Doherty

Michelle O'Doherty has been at Bayne Sellar Ertel Carter since she began her articles in 2011. She was called to the bar in 2012 and has been practicing in criminal defence since that time. She completed her law degree at the University of Ottawa graduating in June 2011. Ms. O’Doherty is a Junior Director of the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa and is involved in the planning of the Montebello Conference. Outside of law, Ms. O’Doherty plays softball and curls. She is a board member for the organization LiveWorkPlay where she has volunteered for over 5 years.

Tobias Okada-Phillips

Leo Russomanno

Leo Russomanno practices exclusively in criminal law. He graduated from the University of Ottawa with a law degree in 2007 and obtained a Master’s Degree in International Politics from Carleton. He has tried all manner of cases from sexual assault, robbery, firearms, drug cases, terrorism, and murder. Leo also taught criminal law classes in the Law and Legal Studies Department at Carleton University for four years, and regularly guest lectures at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. As an Ottawa Director of the Criminal Lawyers’ Association he is often invited to speak to Parliamentarians on criminal legislation.
