Dye & Durham: Here & Now Conference

The Great Legal Reformation - The successful law firm of 2025 will emerge from the choices made by law firm leaders today. In order to create competitive advantage and deliver superior financial returns, law firms need to understand and adapt to the changing ecosystem in which they now live, as well as forecasting what that ecosystem will look like 10 or more years down the road; long term vision and strategy have therefore never been more important for law firms. Mitch Kowalski, examines the challenges law firms face now and in the future - then uses this perspective to suggest a provocative model for the successful law firm of 2025.

Website “Self” Bio: I have developed a seasoned and unique perspective on the redesign of legal services that flows from my research and from my experiences as a former in-house counsel, partner at a  major international law firm, and as a legal services entrepreneur. I constantly challenge the accepted norms of the legal services industry in several ways:
Advisory: I provide advice to in-house lawyers seeking affordable, effective legal services, and to law firms seeking competitive advantage. I have an ICD.D designation in corporate governance, and I have served on a number of Boards of Directors; most recently as a member of the Board of Directors of legal start-ups: LawyerLocate.UK Limited, and Law Shop Canada. I am the inaugural Gowling WLG Visiting Professor in Legal Innovation at the University of Calgary, and in 2012 I was selected as a Fastcase 50 Global Legal Innovator.
Speaking and Commentary: I am the author of Avoiding Extinction: Reimagining Legal Services for the 21st Century, and The Great Legal Reformation: Notes From the Field. I speak at conferences and law firm events globally. I have also written for a variety of publications around the world, including a monthly column for Canadian national newspaper, The National Post, that focuses on challenges in the global legal services industry. International and national news media often ask me for comment on the Canadian and global legal services industry.
