These nuts and bolts presentations are appropriate for all levels of counsel. Integral aspects of trial preparation and presentation will be covered by a faculty of leading trial lawyers including, Charlotte Salomon, Stephen McPhee QC, and David Osborne. Art Vertlieb QC, past President of the Law Society, will provide tips on dealing with difficult counsel, judges and other personalities in the courtroom. Aspects of both jury and non jury trials will be considered including, direct and cross examination, dealing with exhibits, and retaining, instructing and preparing expert witnesses.

Presenters

Stephen McPhee QC

Stephen McPhee, Q.C. practices in the areas of civil litigation, family law, personal injury, insurance law and commercial litigation. He has had successful appearances in all levels of court in British Columbia – Provincial, Supreme and the Court of Appeal.

Stephen earned B.Comm and Bachelor of Laws degrees at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa and was called to the Bar of the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa in 1996. He was awarded his Canadian National Committee on Accreditation Certificate of Qualification in 2000 and was admitted to the British Columbia Bar in 2002.

Stephen was President of the BC Branch of the Canadian Bar Association in 2010 / 11 and is still actively involved in CBA committee work. He is also a member of the Trial lawyers Association of BC.

Stephen has presented at various CPD events for the CBA, CLE Society and now TLABC.

Stephen was awarded the Queens Counsel designation in December 2011.

David Osborne

David N. Osborne is senior counsel at Osborne Cane Trial Lawyers in Vancouver. He is an Honours Science graduate of Dalhousie University and did post-graduate brain research at UBC as an NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council) fellow. He graduated UBC Law School in 1990 and was a Supreme Court Law Clerk (1990-1991) before articling at Bull Housser & Tupper. Since then Mr. Osborne has established a lengthy record of trial and appellate victories in numerous jury and judge-alone trials. Mr. Osborne is a past-President and Governor of the TLABC and a frequent speaker or chair of continuing legal education seminars.

Charlotte A. Salomon

Charlotte A. Salomon was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1996, after articling with McConnan Bion O’Connor & Peterson. She is currently a managing partner at that firm.  Her preferred areas of practice are personal injury litigation, as well as solicitor’s work involving wills and estates. She also has experience in real property matters.

Charlotte currently is an elected member of the Canadian Bar Association Provincial Council for the Victoria County and is Chair of the CBA BC Advisory Committee to the Judicial Council of British Columbia.  She also sits on the board of directors of the British Columbia Assessment Authority.

Charlotte was the 2010 President of the Victoria Bar Association. She has also been the Chair of the BC CBA Civil Litigation Section for Vancouver Island and a member of the Government Relations Committee and Court Services Committee of the BC CBA. As well, Charlotte has also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Victoria Conservatory of Music and is interested in Federal politics, having been President of two Federal Riding Associations.  She has lectured on Civil Litigation, Wills and Estates, and Leadership issues.

Art Vertlieb QC

Art Vertlieb QC is a former President of the Law Society of British Columbia.

Mr. Vertlieb was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1973. He is a trial lawyer who has appeared in criminal and civil matters in all levels of Court, both Provincial and Federal, up to and including the Supreme Court of Canada. From 2010 to 2012 Mr. Vertlieb served as Commission Counsel to the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry which looked into the mass murder of vulnerable women from the downtown eastside of Vancouver, British Columbia (the Pickton victims). As well, from 2007 to 2010 Mr. Vertlieb served as Commission Counsel to the Braidwood Inquiry which examined the safety of conducted energy weapons and the death of Robert Dziekanski.

Mr. Vertlieb is a former President and founding Vice-President of the Trial Lawyers Association of BC, a former Chair and founding member of the Lawyers Assistance Program of BC, a former member of the editorial advisory board for CIVJI (Civil Jury Instructions) published by the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC and a former governor of the American Association of Justice. His professional service includes acting as a director of the Continuing Legal Education Society and the BC Courthouse Library Society. Mr. Vertlieb served for five years as a member of the Judicial Council of British Columbia. He is an elected fellow of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers and a member of the Yukon Law Society Discipline Committee.

In 2009, Mr. Vertlieb received the prestigious CBABC's Georges A. Goyer, QC Memorial Award for his contributions to the legal profession, particularly his founding role with the Lawyers Assistance Program (LAP) and the Trial Lawyers Association of BC. He has also received the LAP Lawyer Helping Lawyer Award (2001), the Trial Lawyers Association of BC Outstanding Achievement Award (1993), the Alumni Gold Key Award from Osgoode Hall Law School (2002) and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012).

He has served on the boards of the Canadian Memorial Community Centre, the Vancouver Academy of Music, and as a coach and President of Arbutus Shaughnessy Little League Baseball.
