Criminal Law at a Crossroads

Presenters

Richard C. Gibbs QC

I was born in 1951 and grew up in Powell River. I started my career there, was called to the Bar in 1976, and practiced there until late 1977. I then moved to Prince George and, after practicing with a large firm for a year, I opened my own law office in February,1979. I have been a very busy, self-employed barrister ever since. My practice has been in family law, criminal defence, civil litigation, and administrative law.

My cases have taken me to the British Columbia Provincial Court, Supreme Court, and Court of Appeal many, many times. I have been privileged to appear a number of times in the Supreme Court of Canada. I have represented clients in the courts of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, the Yukon and Northwest Territories. I take great pride that I routinely act for lawyers in very serious matters in their professional and private lives. I was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2001. I served as a Bencher (a position like a governor or director) of the Law Society of British Columbia from 1996-2002, finishing as President. (The Law Society is the governing body of BC’s approximately 11,000 lawyers.) Part of my duty as a Bencher was to judge discipline cases against lawyers accused of professional misconduct or conduct unbecoming a lawyer.

Together with the late Alan Bate, QC, I was one of the founders of the Lawyers Assistance Program in Northern British Columbia. I served as a Governor of the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia for about 10 years, not standing for re-election in 2012. I have made international observer appearances for Lawyers Rights Watch Canada and Amnesty International at human rights trials in Malaysia and Singapore. I frequently present at continuing professional development courses in advocacy and professional responsibility and am an occasional contributor of articles to the TLABC’s publication “The Verdict”.
