The Honourable Justice David Brown

Justice David Brown was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in December, 2014, after sitting as a judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario in the Toronto Region since September, 2006, including several years on the Toronto Region Commercial List.  Immediately prior to his appointment to the Court of Appeal, Justice Brown was serving as the President of the Ontario Superior Court Judges’ Association.

Before his appointment to the Bench, he was a partner with Stikeman Elliott LLP (Toronto) in its Litigation and Energy Groups.  He served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Osgoode Hall Law School teaching Energy Law from 2004 until 2006, and a Sessional Lecturer at Queen’s University Law School from 1990 to 2002 teaching Trial Advocacy. Justice Brown writes on a number of legal topics, including civil procedure reform and Newfoundland legal history.

Justice Brown earned his B.A. (Hons.), University of Toronto, 1976; Certificate, Beijing Languages Institute, 1977; Diploma, Nanjing University, 1978; J.D., 1981, University of Toronto; L.L.M., Osgoode Hall Law School, 2005; called to the Ontario Bar, 1983.

Jock Climie

Jock, a partner with the firm, graduated from Queen's University Law School in 1994, and has been called to the bars of both Ontario and British Columbia. Jock enjoyed a 12-year career in the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes, Ottawa Rough Riders and Toronto Argonauts, and continues to be a part of the league as an on-air football analyst for TSN. Jock has extensive litigation experience in both criminal and employment law. He is a former criminal and labour litigation lawyer with the Department of Justice. Jock has conducted numerous trials and arbitrations and has appeared in the federal and provincial appellate courts on appeals and judicial review applications. Fluently bilingual, Jock has been working with a diverse clientele in the private, public, education and not for profit sectors. He provides advice on all aspects of labour and employment law. A recipient of the Ottawa Business Journal's Forty Under 40 Award in 2008, Jock is active in the community and continues to participate in countless fundraising and charitable events.

Justice Charles Hackland

Justice Hackland was appointed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in October of 2003. He was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1978 after completing his legal studies at the University of Ottawa Law School (LL.B,1975) and Oxford University (B.C.L.,1977) and articling at the Supreme Court of Canada. Prior to his appointment, he was a senior partner at Gowlings LL.P. (Ottawa) specializing in employment and administrative law and the representation of physicians and other professionals. Justice Hackland served as Regional Senior Judge of the Superior Court of Justice, East Region, (2008-14). During that period he served as Chair of the Committee of Administrative Judges of the Small Claims Court. Justice Hackland is currently a member of the Superior Court bench in Ottawa and a member of Deputy Judges’ Council (which administers Ontario’s Small Claims Court), and Chair of the Council’s Education Advisory Committee. He currently serves on the Canadian Judicial Council’s Advisory Committee on Judicial Ethics and is a facilitator in the National Judicial Institute’s Evidence Workshop and Seminar for New Federally Appointed Judges.

Mark Josselyn

Mark Josselyn is a partner in Gowlings' Ottawa office and the Ottawa group leader of the Firm's Employment and Labour Law National Practice Group. His practice focuses in the areas of employment law, insurance defence and commercial litigation. Mark is an advocate before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Court of Appeal and before various tribunals, including the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario. He has significant training and experience in mediation and other conflict resolution procedures.

John Westdal

John practices on behalf of both employees and employers in all areas of labour and employment law. Throughout John’s legal career, he has devoted himself exclusively to this field. He commenced his practice with a boutique labour and employment firm in Ottawa. In 1998 he ventured to Australia where he worked in the Workplace Relations Group of a leading Australian firm. During this time, he also gained valuable hands-on experience with a secondment to the firm’s human resources department. Upon his return to Ottawa in 2001, John continued his labour and employment practice. John is a graduate of McGill (Economics, 91) and Queen’s (Law, 95). He regularly speaks at seminars for lawyers and human resources practitioners and is the Co-Chair of this program. He has appeared before a variety of courts and tribunals at the federal and provincial level. John is the Chair of the Law Day Fun Run/Walk, which raises money for local charities, and he is an active participant in other volunteer organizations. He is also an avid mountain biker and cross-country skier.
