Presenters

Master Marie Fortier

Master Marie T. Fortier was called to the bar in 1983 and appointed as case management master for the Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa in October 2016. Master Fortier has served in a variety of adjudicative and quasi-judicial roles. She has held the position of deputy judge of the Small Claims Court, associate chair of the Animal Care Review Board, and Regional Director of Education with the Law Society of Upper Canada. Master Fortier litigated civil matters at all levels of Ontario courts, in both French and English in her previous career as a litigator in private practice. Master Fortier has been active in her community, providing legal guidance and leadership for local environmental, education, and sports organizations. She has also volunteered her time with local youth softball and hockey teams.

Jennifer Ng

Jennifer Ng is an associate lawyer with Templeman’s litigation department and practices all aspects of general litigation, with a focus on corporate and commercial litigation. Jennifer was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 2014 and joined Templeman after articling and practicing intellectual property litigation at an international law firm.

Jennifer completed her law degree at Queen’s University graduating on the Dean’s Honour List in 2013. Prior to law school, Jennifer completed a pharmacy degree at the University of Toronto and worked as a registered pharmacist in the community and for the government.

Jennifer lives in Kingston and is kept busy with her law practice, waiting in traffic across the LaSalle Causeway and chasing after her two little girls.

Justice Michelle O'Bonsawin

Madam Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin is fluently bilingual and the first Indigenous judge named to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa. Prior to joining the Superior Court of Justice, she was General Counsel at the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group and previously Counsel at the Canada Post Corporation. Madam Justice O’Bonsawin practiced in the areas of mental health, labour, employment, human rights and privacy law. She has also taught part-time at the University of Ottawa’s French Common Law program. Madam Justice O’Bonsawin is a frequent guest speaker on issues of mental health, labour and privacy law. She received her LL.M. (Health) at Osgoode Hall in 2014 and is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Ottawa where she received her LL.B. from the French Common Law program. Madam Justice O’Bonsawin was awarded the Rising Star Award by Lexpert Magazine, recognizing her as one of Canada’s leading lawyers under 40.

Madame la juge Michelle O’Bonsawin est parfaitement bilingue et la première juge autochtone nommée à la Cour supérieure de justice de l’Ontario à Ottawa. Avant d’être nommée juge, elle était l’Avocate-générale au Groupe de soins Royal Ottawa et auparavant, Avocate à la Société canadienne des postes. Madame la juge O’Bonsawin pratiquait dans les domaines de la santé mentale, du droit du travail et de l’emploi, des droits de la personne et de la protection de la vie privée. Elle a également enseigné à temps partiel à l’Université d’Ottawa, au programme de common law en français. Madame la juge O’Bonsawin est régulièrement conférencière sur des questions liées à la santé mentale, au droit du travail et à la protection de la vie privée. Elle a reçu son LL.M. (Santé) à Osgoode Hall en 2014 et est candidate au doctorat à l’Université d’Ottawa d’où elle a obtenu son LL.B. du programme de common law français. Madame la juge O’Bonsawin était Lauréate du prix Rising Star par le magazine Lexpert, la reconnaissant comme l'une des meilleures avocates de moins de 40 ans au Canada.

Karen Perron

Karen Perron is a Partner in the Ottawa office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 2004. Her practice focuses on commercial litigation and encompasses banking litigation, bankruptcy and insolvency litigation and directors’ and officers’ liability. She is fully bilingual and has appeared before numerous courts in Ontario including in complex commercial disputes before the Commercial List sittings in Toronto. Karen regularly volunteers at Pro Bono Ontario’s Law Help Centre in the Ottawa courthouse. She also enjoys being active in the legal community, including in her role as the 2nd Vice-President of the Ontario Bar Association.
