Andrew Murray, chair of Lerners’ Digital Leadership Committee and a leading thinker on the implications of artificial intelligence in legal practice, shows how carefully crafted prompts unlock AI potential in legal work by sharing real examples such as refining medical terminology reports, conducting dynamic case research and preparing discovery strategies for slip and fall cases. He emphasizes defining tone, intended audience and length in prompts, outlines safeguards against AI generated errors and client data exposure and highlights tools like ChatGPT, Alexi, Microsoft Copilot and Harvey for tasks ranging from mediation net offer calculations to hospital record summaries. Key takeaways include matching prompt framing to expertise levels, verifying automated calculations before relying on them, using AI to ease administrative burdens and starting with free versions to build confidence before investing in subscriptions.
