Jill Alexander

Jill Alexander joined Aviva Trial Lawyers’ newly established Ottawa office in 2021. Prior to joining ATL, Jill was in private practice for more than twenty years and worked exclusively in the area of civil litigation both at a national law firm and a litigation boutique. Over the course of her career Jill has provided legal advice and services to many insurers (and their insureds) on a wide variety of matters including professional liability, product liability, property damage claims, subrogated claims and personal injury actions. Jill is an active member of Ottawa’s legal community having served as a trustee and President of the Carleton County Law Association (CCLA). In 2008 Jill was the recipient of the CCLA’s Regional Senior Justice Award for her outstanding contributions within and outside of the profession. Jill has appeared before the Small Claims Court of Ontario, the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Ontario Court of Appeal for Ontario. When she is not working, Jill enjoys spending time at her cottage and at the ski hill with her husband and three kids. She also has a small obsession with home renovations and DIY projects.

Regional Senior Justice Mark Edwards

Mr. Justice Edwards received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) from Queen's University in 1975; an LL.B from Cambridge University in 1978 and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Dalhousie University in 1979. He was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1981. He was an associate with Osler Hoskin & Harcourt from 1979 to 1984. Mr. Justice Edwards began practising with the firm Beard Winter in 1984 and, until the date of his appointment, was managing partner. His main areas of practice were civil litigation, tort and insurance law. At his swearing in one of his colleagues suggested Mr Justice Edwards had done over 100 civil jury trials. While in practice he argued numerous appeals at the Court of Appeal –some successfully and appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada. Mr. Justice Edwards has been a guest speaker at various conferences offered by the Advocates Society, the Law Society of Upper Canada and the National Judicial Institute. Since his appointment Justice Edwards has been a member of the Civil Rules Committee;the Civil Case Management Committee; and the Class Action Liaison Committee. At present he is the Regional Senior Justice for Central East.

Marion Sandilands

Marion has acted for civil society organizations, legislative officers, industry associations, parliamentarians, businesses, and Indigenous clients. She serves clients in both English and French. Marion is knowledgeable in constitutional law, administrative law, and language rights. She publishes and frequently speaks on these topics. She currently teaches Canadian Federalism Law at the University of Ottawa, and has taught the Legislative Process at McGill’s Faculty of Law. Marion joined Conway in 2019 after serving as Counsel to the Chief Justice of the Federal Court. She also previously served as a law clerk at the Supreme Court of Canada and the Federal Court. Prior to her career in law, Marion worked in the field of international development where she helped manage overseas projects ranging from rural livelihoods to economic research. This work took her to Kenya, Vietnam, Senegal, and Mexico. When Marion isn’t wrestling with legal matters or with her two little children, she can be found teaching, mentoring, singing, and curling.
