Presenters

Carol Cochrane

Carol Cochrane has been with the law firm of Low, Murchison Radnoff LLP since her call to the Bar many moons ago (although back at that time, it was just “Low Murchison.”) Carol restricts her practice to the field of family law, maintaining a mix of matrimonial litigation, domestic contract negotiations, mediation and arbitration. This year marks Carol’s fifth and final year serving as the moderator of the Fabulous Spousal Support Panel. Why final you ask? Well, after 35 years with LMR, Carol has decided to join the ranks of the unemployed at the end of this year, with the plan being for her to enjoy her retirement as much as she has her years of family law practice in Ottawa.

John Goodwin

John received his LLP from the University of Toronto in 1973 and was called to the Bar in 1975. John has been a practicing Family Lawyer since his call. He became a Family Mediator in 1982 and a he is Collaborative Family Law Lawyer since 2002. As the first President of the Ontario Association for Family Mediation in 1982 (the first one in Canada) and a continuing educator in alternative dispute resolution, John has long been a proponent of the non-adversarial resolution of issues that arise when families restructure during separation and divorce. The focus of his practice is on achieving fair and effective settlements for his clients without going to court. This is the aim of the Family Mediation and Collaborative Family Law processes. John is an Accredited Family Mediator (Ontario Association for Family Mediation) and he has also qualified as a member of the panel of the Ottawa Collaborative Family Law group. John’s website is www.ottawamediation.com.

Jim Jeffcott

Jim is the President of Collaborative Practice Ottawa. He is a founding member and a practitioner of Collaborative Practice since 2002. He has spoken extensively regarding Collaborative Practice and Family Law, including presenting to judges, to other practitioners and to financial planners. Jim is a partner at Low Murchison Radnoff LLP and was called to the Bar in 1990. He has practiced as a general practitioner in Eastern Ontario and Ottawa since that time. The largest part of his practice is focused on Family Law and he encourages clients to consider appropriate issue resolution processes outside of the court process. He continues to work on adversarial files as well. He is also a trained mediator. Jim is divorced. He is the father of two adult children. He resolved his legal issues with his former spouse outside of the court process, for which he is grateful. Jim is pleased to have the opportunity to speak to members of the bar about resolving issues outside of the court process.

Gerry Yemensky

Gerald Yemensky was called to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 1986. Since that time, he has maintained a private practice in Ottawa in conjunction with the law firm Campbell Clark Yemensky. Gerald focuses primarily on family law arbitration, mediation and collaborative family law. He is actively involved in the County of Carleton Law Association and the Family Bar Association. Gerald currently serves as a Director for Collaborative Practice Ottawa. He is also an active member of the Ottawa Association of Family Arbitrators. Gerald has acted as a mediator in family matters since 1992 and is an active member of the Ontario Association for Family Mediation. He has been a fully accredited Arbitrator since 2008, has acted as Collaborative Family Counsel since 2003, and currently serves on the Board of Directors for Collaborative Practice Ottawa. He is past- president of the Children’s Bridge Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to assisting children abroad (www.cbfoundation.com). When the sun goes down, Gerald cranks up the Stratocaster as lead guitar for the Verdict, a band of mostly lawyers who perform regularly at charity and fundraising functions in the Ottawa region. The Verdict was honoured by the County of Carleton Law Association in 2006 with the Gordon F. Henderson award in recognition of exceptional contributions to the community for its ten year history of raising funds for worthy causes. This is Gerry’s first year on the conference planning committee.
