One thing I’ve learned: not everyone arrives at their destination by a straight path, and the things learned along the way can be invaluable. For reasons too complicated to explain, I left home at age sixteen. I worked for a number of years as a glazier, and steadily amassed the necessary high school credits to go to university. The upside was that when I finally was able to go to university, I was ready to study and did well. I was fortunate in gaining early admission to law school. I articled in criminal law and practiced as a criminal lawyer for a few years, lived abroad for a while (managed the legal department of a software company – basically drafting and enforcing distributorship agreements), and then pursued graduate studies in the UK. I have been a Fellow of both St. Peter’s College, Oxford and Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Since 2003, I have lived in Kingston where I teach at Queen’s University and practise law. My partner, Meredith Galbraith, is a veterinarian. Together, we have six children, five dogs, two cats, and fairly busy lives.
