Barb Nicholls

Barbara Nicholls is a partner at the law firm of Low Murchison Radnoff LLP. She is head of the firm’s Employment and Labour Law group. A University of Ottawa law school graduate, Barbara was called to the bar in 1987.Barbara acts for both employers and employees dealing with employment contracts, wrongful dismissals, buyout and severance packages, human rights issues, discipline, benefits and pension issues. Barbara is involved in preparation and presentation of cases before labour tribunals, at arbitrations and before the courts. She has appeared before various appellate courts including the Ontario and Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. Barbara advises clients at both the local and national levels on trends in employment and labour legislation and jurisprudence. Barbara is a frequent speaker on human rights, labour and employment law and practice issues. She is a former treasurer of the Ottawa Chapter of the Women’s Law Association, a member of the Advisory Committee at Algonquin College, a mentor for new immigrants in OCISO’s professional mentorship program, a director of the Nepean Kanata Rotary Club and member of the Board of the Ottawa Rotary Home, as well as the Opera Lyra Guild.

Janice Payne

Janice Payne is a senior partner at Nelligan O'Brien Payne. She has represented clients in cases that have strengthened the rights of employees in both the public and private sectors. Janice has also represented Canada’s Inuit in the Residential Schools settlement negotiations and in the proceedings to certify the class action and approve the settlement. She has been recognized by her peers in the legal community on a number of occasions. In 2001, Janice was honoured for her pioneer role in the legal profession by the Women’s Law Association of Ontario. She was also honoured by The Advocates’ Society at its 2007 Ottawa Advocate Honoree Dinner, for her outstanding contribution as a lawyer in the Ottawa area. In 2008, Janice was awarded the Businesswoman of the Year, Professional Category, by the Women’s Business Network. She was awarded the prestigious Diamond Jubilee medal in 2012, and was inducted into the Wall of Honour by the University of Ottawa Common Law Society. More recently, Janice was selected as a Leading Practitioner in the 2013 edition of The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory and selected as Ottawa Labour and Employment Law “Lawyer of the Year” in the 2014 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada. Janice is also frequently invited to speak and write on employment issues.

Alaina Spec

Alaina graduated from Carleton University with her Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice in 2003. She then went on to Queen’s University where she obtained her Juris Doctor in 2006. In the summer of 2006, Alaina joined Low, Murchison LLP as an articling student, where she is currently an Associate. Alaina went on to obtain her Masters of Laws Specializing in Tax Law from Osgoode Hall Law School in 2013. Alaina’s practice areas include a broad range of corporate and commercial matters, with a focus on corporate re-organizations, and professional corporations. In addition Alaina services her clients, both individuals and corporations, by providing estate planning and estate administration services, as well as real estate. Alaina is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Ontario Bar Association, County of Carleton Law Association, and STEP Canada (Student Member).
