John Bain

Partner, National Leader, Indirect Tax

KPMG LLP

John is a Partner at KPMG LLP based in Toronto and has more than 24 years of commodity tax experience both in Canada and the European Union. He leads KPMG’s Canadian Indirect Tax Practice which offers expertise in GST/HST, Trade & Customs, payroll taxes and environmental levies. He was named Americas Region Leader for Indirect Tax Services effective October 1, 2014.  John is a member of KPMG’s Global

Indirect Tax steering committee. He has been recognized as an indirect tax leader in The Comprehensive Guide to the World's Leading Indirect Tax Advisers by The International Tax Review. He advises a wide array of clients on the application of Canadian and global indirect taxes and is principally focused on the financial, private equity and manufacturing sectors. John began his career with KPMG in the UK where he spent three years in the banking practice advising on VAT issues.

John is a former senior tax policy officer with the Department of Finance Canada, where he was responsible for GST policy and legislation for services and cross-border movement of goods. He also worked for the European Commission in Belgium as VAT

policy officer on issues related to the financial sector and cross-border matters. Finally, he worked at the Canada Revenue Agency, where he was a manager responsible for GST interpretive policy and rulings related to real property issues. John is the Past Chair of the Commodity Tax Policy Committee for the Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada association, is a participant in the GST Leaders Forum and in the past has participated in indirect tax technical advisory groups and working groups at both the OECD and WTO on cross-border issues.  He speaks

frequently at tax conferences and is a published author on VAT and GST-related matters.

Noreen Marchand

Partner, US Tax

Noreen Marchand is a subject matter expert in the field of US and cross border tax for businesses in the manufacturing and technology industries. She has worked with cross border businesses of all sizes to help structure business expansion, manage tax costs, repatriate profits and address mobile workforce issues.

Noreen is in constant pursuit of new challenges with a view to raising the bar for herself and her team. She is known as a developer of people and teams, regularly building virtual coalitions across geographies and practice areas.

Noreen's personal area of passion is the advancement of young women in business. In addition to the work she has done with KPMG's Women In Line for Leadership (WILL) program, Noreen is a mentor for several women pursuing careers in business. Noreen is also an active director at the YWCA Cambridge, whose mandate is responding to the needs of women and girls through innovative programs, services and advocacy which build capacity and strengthen the community.

In her spare time, Noreen enjoys cooking, baking, and spending time with her husband Adam and their young children, Adyson and Nathan
