Court Processes that Extend Family Violence, Immigrant Communities, & more

Paula Puddy, HBA LLB MBA

The County of Carleton Law Association (CCLA) hosts this three-part seminar featuring presenters Leighann Burns, Tamara Scarowsky, Ferzana Chaze, Purnima George, Archana Medhekar, Bethany Osborne, and Gilbert Whiteduck.

Leighann Burns and Tamara Scarowsky discuss the systemic challenges surrounding court processes that extend family violence. The presenters examine false assumptions about family violence and its perpetrators, explain the credibility deficit, and discuss the gaps in agencies, and systems that should be available to respond to cases of family violence.

Ferzana Chaze, Purnima George, Archana Medhekar, and Bethany Osborne explore the issue of domestic violence in immigrant communities. The presenters provide data on how financial dependence, values, and language barriers contribute to the lack of awareness in immigrant communities. They also share risk assessment tools, and provide strategies to address the unique dynamics faced by immigrant families experiencing domestic violence.

Gilbert Whiteduck gives an eclectic presentation on the differences in Indigenous family law. He emphasizes the importance of cultural sensitivity, reconciliation, respecting Indigenous legal traditions, and understanding the historical injustices when working with indigenous families.
